TMJ (jaw joint) Therapy

Various factors can strain the temporomandibular jaw joint and the surrounding muscles. The strain can lead to facial discomfort, jaw popping, grinding of teeth and severe headaches.

If your experience symptoms associated with jaw joint misalignment, Dr. Williams will develop a treatment program to relieve your discomfort and alleviate problem areas based upon your individual needs. Dr. Williams training at the L.D.Pankey Institute has enabled him to treat TMJ problems. He has helped patients have a comfortable bite with excellent function and the added benefit of a natural beautiful smile resulting in the look that will last.

Gum Disease

Periodontal disease (gum disease) begins without warning. In early stages, gum disease causes redness, halitosis (bad breath), and sore gums that bleed easily. As the disease progresses, the disease silently attacks bone structure around the roots of your teeth, teeth loosen and are eventually lost.

Because the health of your gums is vitally important to your overall health, we incorporate a careful regime of gum evaluation into each continuing care visit. If you show indications of gum disease, Dr. Williams and his hygienist will discuss recommended treatment with you. He and his team are highly trained to treat gum disease and will restore your gums to a healthy state. When appropriate, they provide a conservative and non-surgical approach to treating the disease.

  • Charting and Diagnostic Services
  • Non-surgical and Surgical Periodontal Therapy
    • Scaling and root planing
We first do a thorough cleaning to remove the plaque and calculus from your teeth above and below the gum line. Then we plane the roots of your teeth, smoothing them so that the gum tissue can attach more firmly to them.
  • Electric toothbrushes – Dr. Williams encourages the use of any type of electric toothbrush. We believe that the results you achieve when cleaning your teeth with an electric toothbrush are better than any you can get with a traditional handheld toothbrush.

We recommend the Rota-dent one step ® toothbrush for our patients, especially in conjunction with non-surgical periodontal therapy. Although the Rota-dent toothbrush is more expensive than store bought electric tooth brushes Dr. Williams and his staff feel it is money well spent because of the “Lifetime Warranty”. No other electric toothbrush has a warranty of this length of time.

Oral surgery

  • Extractions
  • Wisdom teeth
Wisdom teeth (or third molars as they are sometimes called) can be a problem when the jaw doesn’t have enough room to accommodate them. They may fail to grow into their proper positions or may grow only part way above the gums. When this happens we say the teeth are impacted.

Impacted teeth are difficult to clean and can be the source of decay because bacteria grows around them. They may also push your other teeth out of alignment, which harms your ability to chew properly. We usually recommend the removal of your wisdom teeth to help resolve all of these problems.

Restorative Services

When teeth are worn, missing, or overly repaired, your smile’s appearance and the proper fit of your upper teeth to lower teeth become compromised. Dr. Williams is highly dedicated to restoring your teeth to their optimal condition, enhancing both the function and the appearance of each patient’s smile.

Tooth-Colored Fillings
Non-silver, non-mercury fillings match your natural tooth coloring. We use tooth-colored fillings in our office because they look natural and provide better protection for your teeth. They seal the teeth better, because there is no metal in the filling they insulate against hot and cold better, and can be repaired more easily. Many people who are undergoing a cosmetic improvement on their front teeth elect to have dark silver-mercury fillings in their back teeth replaced with bonded ceramic or resin fillings to provide a total natural beautiful smile.

Porcelain Veneers
Porcelain veneers are very thin sections of porcelain that adhere to your natural teeth to serve as a durable covering. They can be used to change the position, shape, size and color of your teeth.

Porcelain veneers can be an excellent solution for anyone with chipped, stained, discolored, unevenly spaced, or slightly crooked front teeth. They provide a completely improved and dazzling smile in just a few appointments.

In your pre-treatment visits, you and Dr. Williams will work together to determine the precise look that you want to achieve with the veneers. Placement of porcelain veneers usually involves just a few visits. You’ll also have a follow up visit or two for final adjustments and polishing. We’ll also review instructions for care of your new smile to ensure it lasts years and years, The Look That Will Last .

Whitening
Tooth whitening is safe, effective and long lasting. In our office we use Rembrandt Sapphire Light in-office bleaching procedures, which can achieve result as much as a 10-shade lighter change in the color of your teeth in one visit.

If you are thinking of other cosmetic improvements, such as crowns, porcelain veneers, or just replacing old discolored fillings, it may be worth considering whitening your teeth first. Any restorations we make for you can be matched to the whitened teeth, to give an overall great result.

Bonding
Dr. Williams can use bonding to correct small defects in your smile—gaps between teeth, spots, chips and discoloration and even fractures. Bonding materials are coated onto existing teeth to reshape and protect your teeth. Bonding allows you to achieve great improvements in just one visit, and in some cases without the need for any numbing.

Crowns, Onlays and Inlays
A Crown is a shell that covers the tooth above the gum to restore its appearance and function. A crown may be a good choice if you're self-conscious about your smile due to cracked, broken, decayed or worn teeth. A crown is the most durable, strongest, longest-lasting way to restore a front or back tooth with extensive damage.

Dr. Williams can use crowns to bring back your healthy, natural-looking smile. Crowns can also be used to correct bite problems, close spaces between teeth, change the angle of teeth, and replace missing teeth permanently, as part of a fixed nonremovable bridge, or over an implant (a replacement for a tooth root).

If more than half of your tooth’s biting surface has been damaged by decay, and you don’t have enough tooth structure left to support a traditional filling, Dr. Williams may recommend restoring your tooth with an onlay or inlay. Inlays are similar in size to standard fillings, and fit within the cusps (bumps) of your tooth; onlays are larger, and may cover one or more cusps.

Onlays and inlays are made in a dental laboratory and then bonded to the tooth. They strengthen the tooth, rather than weaken it like traditional filings.

With all the materials and techniques modern dentistry has to offer—composite materials and porcelain — not only can your crowns, onlays and inlays be long lasting but they can also be totally natural looking.

Bridges
A permanent bridge is an appliance made of porcelain that takes the place of a missing tooth. A bridge should look and feel natural, without hooks or clasps, and stay in permanently, allowing totally normal function.

When a tooth is missing, other teeth in your mouth may shift out of position. A fixed bridge will prevent teeth from shifting, and stabilize your bite.

Dentures & Partial Dentures
You don’t have to stop smiling when you’ve lost your natural teeth due to accident, tooth decay or disease. Dr. Williams can make full dentures to replace your teeth, allowing you to eat and speak naturally. Dentures also help prevent your facial muscles from sagging, keeping you younger looking.

When you have lost several teeth, but not all of them, removable partial dentures may be an option for you.

To give you the look, feel and comfort of natural teeth, Dr. Williams may also suggest dental implants to serve as a stable foundation for the attachment of a full upper or lower denture.

Root Canals (Endodontics)
If your tooth’s pulp chamber nerve becomes infected, a root canal is necessary to save the tooth. Today’s root canal procedures are much less involved than former treatment methods, which means it takes less time, usually one visit, and is more comfortable. Dr. Williams has kept up to date with the latest treatments in root canal therapy and is committed to ensuring that you have a successful, comfortable experience.

Dental Implants
When permanent teeth are lost, dental implants can give people the ability to chew comfortably, laugh with confidence and awaken each day with a smile. Dental implants can promote comfort, confidence and self-esteem.

A dental implant acts as a replacement for a tooth root. It is a special surgical grade titanium post, manufactured to highly precise specifications, under strict sterile conditions. The implant is inserted surgically into the jawbone below the gum surface. As the bone bonds to the post, it provides a stable foundation for the attachment of a single tooth, bridge, or full upper or lower denture.

The presence of a dental implant can halt bone loss. It prevents the deep wrinkling and changes in facial appearance that denture wearers often experience.

Dental implants can offer a new lease on life. They are superior to other choices because they are solid, secure, and esthetic. After nearly 35 years of use, they have a 90-95% proven success rate in appropriately chosen cases.

If you have been suffering with partial or full dentures, are missing teeth, or feel you need teeth extracted, don’t hesitate to call us to be evaluated for implants. Dr. Williams has been working with dental implants since 1988.

Cosmetic Services

Today’s dentistry offers many options for enhancing the appearance of your smile. Dr. Williams and his team are highly skilled in the various techniques that provide you with a natural looking smile that feels wonderful.

If you are unhappy with your smile, we may recommend one of these techniques, or a combination of them, to help you achieve a durable, beautiful smile.

Orthodontics
We use Invisalign to straighten your teeth with a series of invisible, custom-molded aligners. Dr. Williams has used Invisalign to successfully treat crowding or excess spacing of teeth. Invisalign can also be used to treat more complex cases such as overbites, underbites, and even crossbites.

Tooth-Colored Fillings
Non-silver, non-mercury fillings match your natural tooth coloring. We use tooth-colored fillings in our office because they look natural and provide better protection for your teeth. They seal the teeth better, insulate against hot and cold better, and can be repaired more easily. Many people who are undergoing a cosmetic improvement on their front teeth elect to have dark silver fillings in their back teeth replaced with the bonded ceramic or resin fillings to provide a total cosmetic improvement.

  • Digital radiography
In our office we use digital radiographs because they offer several advantages. They expose our patients to 70 percent less radiation than traditional dental x-rays. In addition, Dr. Williams can share digital radiographs with you on the chairside computers in his office so that you can see what he sees.
  • Intra-oral camera
The intra-oral camera goes inside your mouth, giving you a clear view of what Dr. Williams and his team members are seeing in your mouth. If needed Dr. Williams or his staff will take a picture of the tooth being repaired. The picture can then be sent to your insurance company for reimbursement.
